Understanding Terminology
Within Canada, and specifically Ontario, only regulated professionals are allowed to use specific titles, such as Clinical Psychologist, Registered Psychotherapist, and Registered Social Worker.
Clinical Psychologist: As a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario, Clinical Psychologists are allowed to conduct
assessments, diagnose and conduct psychotherapy services, but cannot prescribe.
Registered Psychotherapist (RP)/ Registered Psychotherapist Qualifying (RP Qualifying): As a member of the College of
Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario , RPs and RP Qualifying are allowed to conduct psychotherapy services, but cannot diagnose nor prescribe.
Registered Social Worker (RSW): As a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, RSWs
are allowed to conduct psychotherapy services, but cannot diagnose nor prescribe.
